The official ETA categories include a free transit permission for up to two days, with supporting evidence. Whether you need it depends on your connection and whether you enter the country.
Start with your actual connection
Ask your airline whether your luggage is checked through, whether you must pass immigration to check in again, and whether the terminal arrangements allow you to remain airside. Separate tickets and an overnight hotel can change what you need to do.
UK travel advice describes a visa exemption for an onward air connection within 24 hours. That should not be treated as permission for every passport holder to leave the airport. Confirm your own situation with the airline and Sri Lankan authorities.
Compare the three common situations
| Your plan | What to check |
|---|---|
| Remain in the international transit area | Airside eligibility, through-checked luggage and the next boarding pass. |
| Leave the airport for a short stopover | Transit or tourist category, supporting onward ticket and permission before departure. |
| Stay longer or turn the stop into a holiday | The appropriate tourist visa and permitted stay. |
Prepare the onward journey
Keep the confirmed onward flight details, destination entry documents and any accommodation address together. Check the local dates on both flights: crossing midnight can make an apparently short connection span two calendar days.
If your flight changes, ask whether the revised connection still fits your permission. Do not assume an airline disruption automatically extends an allowed stay.
Choose a realistic stopover
A nearby room can be more useful than a rushed sightseeing trip. Include immigration, baggage, the road journey and the airline’s return-to-airport requirement before deciding how much usable time remains.
Compare Negombo transfers and Colombo transfers. These pages help plan the ground journey; they do not establish transit eligibility.
