Our suggested route

Negombo 1 night → Sigiriya 2 nights → Kandy 2 nights → Negombo 1 night. Seven calendar days, six nights, starting and finishing at Bandaranaike International Airport.

A planning framework for a culture-focused first visit. Allow for your actual flights, current conditions and transport availability.

The week at a glance

Day Plan Sleep
1 Arrive, transfer and settle in Negombo
2 Travel inland; a quiet afternoon Sigiriya
3 Sigiriya and time around your base Sigiriya
4 Transfer toward Kandy; optional Dambulla stop Kandy
5 Kandy at your own pace Kandy
6 Return toward the airport; flexible evening Negombo
7 Airport transfer and departure —

Day 1: arrive without a full schedule

Confirm your pickup and the first night’s room before leaving home. Once you reach your accommodation, make space for a meal, water and rest. Treat any walk or outing as optional. If you land very early, ask the property in advance whether the room will be ready and whether an extra night is needed.

Use the first 24 hours guide for the arrival sequence and the transfer guide for the questions to ask a driver.

Days 2–3: give Sigiriya a full day

Make day 2 a transfer day rather than trying to squeeze in the main climb on arrival. Book two nights at the same base and leave day 3 for Sigiriya’s rock, gardens and museum according to your interests and ability. An early start can leave a quieter afternoon for the accommodation or surrounding area.

Check official opening arrangements and current tickets before visiting. Bring water and practical footwear, and choose activities that fit everyone in the group. A second major excursion is optional; a full itinerary does not need to mean a full timetable.

Days 4–5: settle into Kandy

Travel toward Kandy on day 4. If Dambulla is important to you, discuss a stop with your transport provider when planning the route, leaving time for the visit and onward journey. If the transfer is taking longer than expected, go directly to your accommodation.

Use day 5 for a modest selection of Kandy’s cultural sights and time by the lake, with a relaxed meal between activities. Verify visiting arrangements at religious sites and dress appropriately. Choose accommodation by its actual access and location, not only the view in a photograph.

Days 6–7: protect the journey home

Return toward Negombo on day 6 and keep the evening flexible. This final night creates space between the inland journey and the international flight. Reconfirm pickup, check-in timing and your travel documents. On day 7, follow the airline’s airport arrival guidance and the provider’s current road-time estimate.

Adapt the route to your priorities

Want the beach instead? Replace the two-night Kandy block with a coastal stay that fits your season and flight schedule, then reassess all transfer legs. Want Ella as well? Consider the 14-day route instead of adding another hotel change to this week. Travelling with limited mobility? Ask about steps, vehicle access and the suitability of each attraction before committing.

What to book and what to leave flexible

Prioritise the first night, essential transport and final airport transfer. Confirm the total price, inclusions, cancellation conditions and luggage arrangements directly with each provider. We have not assigned fixed journey times or attraction prices: both need checking for your dates. Compare bases in our accommodation guide and complete the arrival checklist.
