Planning a longer stay

A practical starting point for checking Sri Lanka visa extension procedures.

Act before your permission expires

Check the permitted stay recorded for your own entry. An initial approval and a wish to stay longer are different things: an extension needs its own process and decision.

Use the Department of Immigration and Emigration’s official visa extension service and read the current notices. The portal provides registration, application and document-upload steps. Requirements can differ by case.

Prepare before opening the application

  • Read your current permission and make a note of its expiry.
  • Keep the passport data page and requested photograph ready for the official portal.
  • Check the proposed new departure date against your accommodation, insurance and travel arrangements.
  • Retain the application reference, any payment record and the actual decision separately.

Do not assume approval

Submitting an application does not itself establish that your stay has been extended. Follow the official instructions about your circumstances, and seek clarification directly if your expiry is approaching. We do not publish a universal maximum stay, guaranteed fee or guaranteed processing time.

If your circumstances involve an overstay, a lost passport, a disputed status or an exceptional travel disruption, contact the Department directly. This editorial guide cannot resolve an individual immigration case.
