Sri Lanka business visa: choose the right route

Prepare for a meeting, conference or short business visit without assuming tourist rules apply to your work.

The short answer

Describe what you will actually do in Sri Lanka before choosing a visa category. A tourist fee exemption does not establish permission for business or employment.

Which activities need a closer look

The official short-visit page lists meetings, negotiations, conferences and some short training among business activities. Employment, residence, journalism and NGO work can involve different permissions or additional approval.

Prepare a plain-language description of your work: who you will meet, what you will deliver, whether you will be paid and how long you will stay. Send that description to the relevant Sri Lankan mission or immigration office if the category is unclear.

Confirm the application channel

The government’s short-visit guidance directs business applicants to Sri Lankan overseas missions or the Department of Immigration and Emigration. Confirm the current route for your nationality and purpose before submitting a tourist form.

Read any instructions supplied by the authority handling your case. Different entry types or longer visits may require a different process. This guide cannot decide whether a particular assignment qualifies.

Build a useful document folder

  • Your travel passport and proposed dates.
  • An invitation or meeting details from the Sri Lankan organisation, if requested.
  • A clear description of the activity and the organisations involved.
  • Accommodation and onward travel arrangements.
  • The authority’s current document checklist and correspondence.

This is a preparation list, not a universal mandatory document list. Submit personal and business records only to the official channel or an authorised adviser you have chosen.

Review fees and entry conditions

Use the business column in the fee guide and verify the charge with the authority. The tourist exemption should not be carried across to a different category.

Check the number of entries and permitted stay on the issued permission before adding a return visit. If the work changes, ask whether the existing permission remains appropriate.
