Sri Lanka ETA for children and family trips

Keep each child’s documents, application outcome and arrival arrangements clear when one adult is organising the trip.

The short answer

The official fee schedule exempts children under 12 from tourist ETA fees for visits up to 30 days. A fee exemption does not remove the need to check and obtain the appropriate permission.

Prepare each traveller individually

Create a private checklist for every family member. Record the travel document used, submission reference, decision and date checked. Keep a child’s record separate from the organising adult’s record.

Use the child’s actual passport details. If a document or family situation is unusual, ask the official service how to complete the application before submitting. Do not assume an adult approval covers a child or that a group submission means all decisions are identical.

Check age and nationality carefully

Compare the child’s date of birth with the travel dates and the category selected. If a birthday falls close to the trip, confirm how the official application applies its age rule. Do not alter a date to obtain a lower fee.

Older children may qualify under their own nationality’s tourist exemption. Parents and children can hold different passports, so check nationality guidance for each person rather than using the household’s address.

One parent or another accompanying adult

Ask the airline and the relevant authorities what consent or relationship documents are appropriate for your circumstances, including any transit country. This page does not claim that one consent form meets every country’s requirements.

Keep needed documents accessible during the journey, while storing copies securely. Do not submit children’s passport scans to this website: we are an information guide and cannot review individual applications.

Make arrival easier for the whole family

Confirm child seats, luggage space, late check-in and the actual bed arrangement with providers before booking. A room described as “family” may not have the layout you need.

Plan a light first day and avoid a long inland transfer after a tiring flight if a nearby overnight would suit your group better. Start with the arrival plan, airport to Negombo and the one-week itinerary.
