The current Sri Lankan notice includes US nationals in the free 30-day tourist ETA scheme. Obtain the ETA before arrival and check the conditions on the permission issued to you.
Use nationality, not your departure airport
This guide is for a tourist travelling with a US passport. If you live in the United States but travel on another country’s passport, start with that nationality. For dual nationality, a changed passport or an unusual travel document, ask the official service which details to use before submitting.
A short holiday and a trip involving employment, study or another purpose should not be treated as interchangeable. Use the category that matches what you will actually do.
Make one reliable application record
Set aside your passport, intended travel dates, a working email address and first accommodation details. Compare each field against the original document, especially similar-looking characters and dates. Keep one folder for the reference, outcome and the passport used.
The entry requirements guide links the official passport-validity, return-ticket and funds checks. Use the linked US Department of State country information as a separate pre-departure check for travel conditions and consular guidance.
Separate the government fee from a service fee
Apply through the official ETA portal and check its current notice. A private website may charge for assistance even when a government tourist ETA is free. Read who is providing a service, what the charge covers and the terms before using it.
This guide does not sell ETA processing. Our step-by-step overview sends you to the government service. Save your acknowledgement, then check for the actual outcome. Use the status guide if you need to return to a submitted application.
Plan around the arrival date in Sri Lanka
Put the local arrival date from your flight confirmation into your planning notes. With a long journey and connections, it is easy to arrange a hotel or driver for the date you leave home instead. Send your accommodation the flight number and local landing time and ask which night must be booked for access to a room.
Keep the first day light: a confirmed pickup, somewhere to rest and a flexible meal are enough. Avoid paying for a time-sensitive excursion immediately after the flight.
Choose a route with a departure buffer
The 14-day itinerary separates cultural stops, hill country and the coast, then returns near the airport before departure. For a shorter visit, the 7-day route concentrates on fewer stops. Use our first 24 hours guide to connect either route to the airport.
