The short answer

Smartraveller currently describes a free tourist ETA for Australian passport holders visiting for up to 30 days. It advises applying online before travel. Check the official ETA service and obtain the required approval before departure.

Start with the passport you will use

An Australian residential address or visa does not make a traveller an Australian passport holder. If you are applying with another nationality, use that passport’s route. For a renewed passport, an unusual document or dual nationality, clarify the correct application details with the official service before submission.

Check the passport and permission requirements separately from your airline booking. Our entry requirements page links the Sri Lankan authority’s document checklist.

Make the application easy to review

Use eta.gov.lk, keeping your actual passport beside the form. Review every name and document number before submitting. Use an email address you will be able to access while abroad and save the reference independently of your inbox.

Read the outcome itself. An acknowledgement confirms receipt, while an approval is a separate result. If further review is requested, follow the official instructions. The status-check guide explains how to return to the government service.

Read travel advice alongside visa guidance

Consult Smartraveller’s Sri Lanka advice when planning and again shortly before departure. Immigration permission and practical travel conditions are separate checks. Review the advice for any transit country on your ticket as well.

Confirm that your travel insurance fits the activities you intend to do. Keep insurer and accommodation contact details somewhere accessible without mobile data. If a planned activity changes, check its requirements before treating it as covered by an earlier booking.

Give arrival and departure their own space

Use the local dates shown on your flight confirmation when arranging pickup and accommodation. Ask the property how it handles an early arrival or late check-in; booking a room for the calendar date alone may not provide immediate access.

Choose a light first day and a final overnight that makes the airport transfer manageable. Our first 24 hours guide helps organise the arrival essentials, from offline records to a clear pickup arrangement.

Build the trip around available days

Choose the one-week itinerary for a focused cultural visit, or the two-week itinerary for culture, Ella and a coastal stay. These are flexible planning suggestions, not packaged tours or live booking offers. Verify transport and accommodation before committing.
