Book through Sri Lanka Railways’ official seat-reservation service. Its FAQ currently allows booking up to 30 days ahead; availability depends on the service and date.
Choose the stations before the photograph
Start with the journey you need to make, then check the operating timetable. Confirm the exact boarding and destination stations and how you will reach the hotel at each end. A social-media image is not evidence of the service operating on your date.
Compare the entire transfer with a road alternative. A scenic leg can be a worthwhile part of the holiday, but it should not force an impossible connection or a same-day international flight.
Prepare the reservation
The current FAQ permits up to five seats in one booking, requires each passenger’s NIC or passport details and allocates seats automatically. Use an email address you can access because it carries the e-ticket.
- Search the correct date, stations and passenger count.
- Check the service and class actually offered.
- Review names and document details before payment.
- Finish the payment and retain the confirmed e-ticket.
The official FAQ lists a 5% online convenience charge. Review the live total and cancellation terms before paying.
Know what counts as confirmation
The reservation is confirmed after successful payment. The current ordinary-passenger guidance allows the emailed e-ticket, printed or electronic, for travel. Follow the instructions attached to your own booking and carry the document used for it.
A search result, payment attempt or agent’s request receipt is not the same as an issued ticket. If money is deducted without a ticket, use the official service’s payment-issue contact route before paying again.
If the train is unavailable
Check an alternative date or service, ask an enabled station about availability, or use a road transfer. Keep a suitable backup while planning hotels. Do not pay a stranger for a ticket whose name, validity or transferability you cannot establish.
Use the transport comparison and the Kandy and Ella guides to plan both ends of a hill-country journey. Never stand on active tracks or lean out of a moving train for photographs.
