Negombo 1 → Sigiriya 4 → Kandy 2 → Ella 4 → one coast 6 → Colombo 2 → Negombo 1. Twenty nights across twenty-one days, with longer stays instead of a new hotel every morning.
The three-week route
| Days | Base | Nights | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Negombo | 1 | Arrival and rest. |
| 2–5 | Sigiriya | 4 | Cultural visits with a flexible day. |
| 6–7 | Kandy | 2 | One full cultural day. |
| 8–11 | Ella | 4 | Hill-country outings and time to slow down. |
| 12–17 | Galle or Mirissa | 6 | One coastal base, with optional outings. |
| 18–19 | Colombo | 2 | A deliberate city stop. |
| 20 | Negombo | 1 | Departure buffer. |
| 21 | Airport | — | Fly home. |
The first week: culture without a daily move
After the arrival night, reach Sigiriya on day 2 and settle in. Choose one main historic visit for day 3 and use the next two days for another outing, changing weather or time at your accommodation. Four nights do not need four full-day excursions.
Travel to Kandy on day 6 and use day 7 for selected cultural sights. Check temple arrangements and keep the next journey confirmed before the stay ends.
The hill-country block
Make day 8 the journey to Ella, using a confirmed rail service or a planned road alternative. Keep the next three days flexible: choose walks and viewpoints that suit the conditions and the group’s ability.
Use the Ella guide for accommodation-access questions and the rail guide for booking. Four nights let you change an outing without immediately changing hotels.
Six nights on one coast
Travel on day 12, then stay in one place through day 17. Compare Galle and Mirissa according to the kind of holiday you want. Select a few outings and leave days for the property, food and the coast.
For an east-coast trip, reorder the blocks: Negombo 1 → Sigiriya 4 → Trincomalee 6 → Kandy 2 → Ella 4 → Colombo 2 → Negombo 1. This also totals twenty nights. Recheck every transfer; it is a revised route, not a simple last-minute beach swap.
Finish with a city stay and an airport buffer
Use days 18–19 for Colombo if you enjoy a city stop. If you prefer fewer moves, redistribute those two nights to an earlier base while keeping day 20 near the airport.
Confirm the actual permitted stay from your immigration records; the twenty-one-day plan does not determine your visa entitlement. Recheck the final flight date, pickup and room night before the journey ends.
Book the constraints, leave the rest flexible
Prioritise the first room, essential rail or road transfers and the last airport journey. Check cancellation terms for weather-dependent activities and use actual quotes in your budget.
For less time, choose the 14-day route. A three-week itinerary should create more breathing room, rather than simply increasing the number of stops.
