Germany is included in the current free 30-day tourist ETA scheme. Obtain the ETA before arrival and travel with the passport used in the application.
A passport, rather than a German identity card
The German Federal Foreign Office states that a national identity card is not accepted for this journey. It lists accepted travel documents and requires at least six months’ validity on arrival. Read its document section if you hold a temporary passport or a child’s travel document.
Check the particular document you will carry, including its number and expiry. German residence alone does not establish the same visa arrangements for a traveller holding another nationality.
Review names directly from the document
Compare the application with the passport data page and follow the form’s guidance on special characters and name fields. If the spelling on an airline reservation differs, resolve it with the relevant provider before departure; do not guess which version the immigration system will accept.
Save the submission reference and read the actual decision. Our status guide explains the next steps if an outcome is missing or referred.
Use the German advice as a second check
The Auswärtiges Amt Sri Lanka page provides German-language travel and security advice. Review it for your destination and any transit country before flying.
Keep consular and insurer contacts available offline. For a family holiday, give each traveller their own document checklist rather than assuming the same passport or age rules apply to everyone.
Choose the route after checking your travel month
Use the seasonal guide before choosing a beach. A 10-day route can focus on culture and one coast; three weeks allow more time in the hills. These are original planning suggestions, not package offers.
