The short answer

Choose between a physical SIM and eSIM based on device compatibility, your stay length and whether you need local calls. Check the full plan details before paying.

Official tourist-plan examples

Prices below were displayed on operator pages checked on 27 October 2026. They are snapshots, not live offers. Recheck the linked operator page for validity, taxes, activation and fair-use conditions.

Before buying an eSIM

Check your exact phone model, whether it is network-unlocked and whether it supports the operator’s eSIM. Read when the package starts: purchase, installation and first network connection may be different events.

Keep installation instructions accessible on another screen or offline. Ask about hotspot use, voice calls and support before choosing a data-only product. A travel eSIM with internet access does not necessarily include a Sri Lankan telephone number.

Buying at the airport

Dialog and SLT-Mobitel list arrival-lobby service points at Bandaranaike International Airport and require passport verification for tourist connections. Use an identifiable operator counter and confirm the selected package before activation.

Before leaving, test mobile data, save the support details and check how to see your balance. Keep the receipt. If a physical SIM replaces your home SIM, store the original safely.

Keep control of roaming and essential records

Check which SIM is selected for data and whether your home provider charges for calls or messages abroad. Read your provider’s roaming terms before enabling a second line. Keep boarding documents and the hotel address offline even after the connection works.

Next: your arrival plan, money and payments, and the budget worksheet.
