Money, ATMs and card payments in Sri Lanka

Prepare a practical mix of payment methods and compare the final cost when withdrawing or exchanging money.

The short answer

Plan for a mix of local-currency cash and cards, with a backup payment method kept separately. Confirm acceptance and charges with each provider.

Use an authorised exchange provider

The Central Bank’s foreign-exchange department advises using licensed banks or authorised money changers. Check the amount you will receive after any charges, count the money before leaving and keep the receipt.

The airport lists bank, exchange and ATM services. Exchange enough for your immediate plans according to the rates and fees offered, then reassess later. There is no universal best exchange rate that this page can guarantee.

Check the cost of an ATM withdrawal

Read the on-screen charge before confirming, and check your own bank’s overseas withdrawal and conversion terms. An ATM’s fee and your bank’s fee may be separate. Limits and card acceptance can differ between machines and accounts.

If an ATM offers conversion into your home currency, compare that quoted rate and markup with your card’s terms. Do not assume the option labelled “convenient” is cheaper. Cancel if you cannot understand the total.

Ask about payment before a purchase

For accommodation and transport, confirm the currency, deposit, balance and accepted payment method in writing. A card logo on a booking platform does not establish the arrangements for every payment at the property.

Carry manageable notes for smaller purchases and keep larger reserves secure. Record receipts when several people are sharing trip costs. Our budget worksheet helps separate per-person spending from group costs.

Have a backup that works offline

Keep your bank’s lost-card contact and a second payment option separately from your everyday wallet. Make sure any banking authentication you depend on will work while abroad, without sharing passwords or codes with a seller.

For cash import or export limits, consult current Sri Lankan customs and foreign-exchange rules rather than relying on a travel-budget article. Continue with the first-day guide and connectivity options.
