The short answer

The Netherlands is included in the free 30-day tourist ETA scheme. The exemption is based on passport nationality; an ETA is still required before arrival.

Check your Dutch passport

NederlandWereldwijd states that a Dutch passport must remain valid for at least six months on arrival. Read its passport and visa section alongside the current Sri Lankan notice.

If you live in the Netherlands but travel on another country’s passport, start with that nationality. Resolve a renewed passport or inconsistent document number before departure using the application review guide.

Keep a clear application trail

Submit on the official service, keep the reference and check the decision. For a couple or family, mark each person’s outcome separately. Save the approval offline and make sure its travel details match your plans.

If the result is referred or you cannot find it, follow the status guide. Repeated applications are not a dependable way to resolve an unclear first submission.

Read Dutch travel advice before choosing transport

NederlandWereldwijd’s Sri Lanka advice includes road-safety and fuel-availability information. A scooter or self-drive plan deserves a separate check of local permissions, provider conditions and insurance.

Compare a driver, rail and public transport by the actual journey rather than by the cheapest headline price. Our transport guide lists what to confirm for each option.

Choose a coast for your dates

Use the seasonal overview before choosing between Mirissa and Trincomalee. Avoid adding both coasts to a short holiday merely to cover more places.

The 10-day plan keeps the route focused; the three-week plan gives longer stays at fewer bases.
