A calm arrival

Documents ready. Pickup agreed. Room confirmed. Take care of those three things before flying, and give yourself permission to keep the rest of day one simple.

Before departure: make an offline arrival folder

Save the permission you need for entry, travel confirmation, first accommodation address, pickup instructions and essential contacts where you can reach them without a connection. Keep the originals secure. The entry requirements guide and saved arrival checklist are useful final checks.

Use the local landing date and time from your ticket. For a very early arrival, ask the accommodation which night you need to book to have a room waiting. For a late arrival, confirm reception arrangements and how to reach someone if delayed.

At the airport: finish the formalities first

Follow airport signs and staff instructions for immigration, baggage and customs. Keep your documents accessible while completing these steps. For an entry question, ask the relevant official desk rather than relying on a driver or an unsolicited offer.

Before leaving baggage reclaim, check that you have the correct bags and retain baggage records until you are settled. Deal with a missing or damaged bag through the airline’s airport process before moving on to the next part of the journey.

Money and connectivity: keep the first choice small

Decide in advance how you will pay for the transfer and first meal. If exchanging money or withdrawing cash, compare the displayed rate, charges and receipt. Avoid carrying more than you need for the immediate plan. Check current customs rules separately if travelling with significant cash.

For mobile service, compare an appropriate local SIM, eSIM or your existing provider’s roaming offer. Check device compatibility, validity, data allowance and whether calls are included. Follow the provider’s identity checks and test the service before leaving the counter or setup process. Keep your pickup details available offline as a backup.

Meet your driver with a clear agreement

Have a named meeting point and a way to contact the provider. Confirm the driver or vehicle details match the booking before handing over luggage. Agree on the complete price and currency, including tolls, waiting time, luggage and any required child seat. If a flight delay changes the plan, update the provider through the contact method in your booking.

Our airport transfer guide covers the practical questions to ask. This website does not operate a dispatch desk or confirm bookings.

Choose the first night for convenience

Airport-area or Negombo stay: consider this when rest and a simple onward start matter most. Colombo stay: consider it when city time is part of the plan. Direct inland transfer: discuss it carefully against the landing time, journey estimate and the group’s energy.

Ask the property for its exact address, reception arrangements and realistic access. A destination label covers more than one neighbourhood. Our accommodation planning guide helps compare the details.

Make day one deliberately light

Settle in, eat and rest. A short local outing can be optional, with the first fixed excursion on a later day. Avoid creating a chain of non-refundable appointments around an international arrival. Keep the next transfer and accommodation confirmation available before going to sleep.

Continue with the 7-day culture route or 14-day island route. Both start with an arrival night and finish with a buffer before departure.
