Start with the official service

Use eta.gov.lk for the government application. This website is an independent guide: we do not issue visas, accept application payments, or submit applications on your behalf.

Before you begin, read the notices on the official homepage. The correct route depends on your nationality, passport and purpose of travel. A tourist route should not be used for work or another purpose that requires a different permission.

A calmer application process

  1. Prepare one reliable set of details. Place your passport beside you, use an email account you can access while travelling, and have your travel plans available. Avoid relying on spellings saved in an old booking.
  2. Choose the appropriate purpose. Read the category description before entering your details. If your situation is unusual, resolve it with the Department of Immigration and Emigration first.
  3. Review before submitting. Compare every name, digit and date against the passport you will use to travel. Review the fee shown by the official service before any payment.
  4. Keep the reference. Save your submission record somewhere you can find it. An acknowledgement confirms receipt; it is not the same as an approval.
  5. Read the outcome. Save the approval for your journey. Follow official instructions if your case is referred for further review.
Before you fly: check the permission itself, the passport details and the permitted dates. Do not treat this guide or a payment receipt as travel authorisation.
